Signals was honoured to create a special commemorative issue to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, the stellar series that captured the imagination of millions of fans around the world.
This was an assignment that called for “out of this world” special effects. The collection, designed by Kosta Tsetsekas, John Belisle, Mike Savage and Adrian Horvath, pays homage to the futuristic vision, technology and artistry of the original television series. Lenticular printing was used to create special effects in two of the nine stamps and in the souvenir sheet Official First Day Cover (OFDC).
The StarTrek collection, under license by CBS Consumer Products, features stamps depicting three Canadian cast members: William Shatner, the immortal Captain James T. Kirk; James Doohan, “Scotty”; and John Colicos, who played Kor, the first Klingon to challenge Kirk and his crew. The U.S.S. Enterprise and aKlingon D7-class battle cruiser blast their way onto the coil stamps, while two special-effect lenticular stamps allow for continuous reruns of classic scenes.
Along with a prestige booklet, official first day covers, souvenir sheets and booklets, the Star Trek collection includes postcards, stamp dispensers and four limited-edition items: a framed print signed by William Shatner, a framed stamp pane cancelled with a gold-ink postmark of the Enterprise’s trusty shuttlecraft, a lenticular enlargement, and a lenticular uncut press sheet – a first for any postal administration.
