For someone with developmental disabilities (DD), a simple “hi” can make a big difference.

In fact, when we asked people with DD what would make them feel safer in their daily lives, they said “If people would just say “Hi” to us more … we would fee more included and feel like we had more people to ask for help if we needed it.”

That answer fueled the creative for a multi-media campaign developed for Community Living BC, to increase the safety of people with developmental disabilities throughout the province.

The campaign aimed to build awareness of how individuals can help people with DD feel included, supported and safer. Rather than just inform, the campaign was built around the simple but powerful call to action: “Start with Hi.”

Credibility and accessibility are the keys to the success of “Start with Hi.” This grassroots, community campaign features real people to make a very direct, emotional appeal. Inexpensive video, web technologies, posters, community newspaper ads and buttons make the message accessible to all British Columbians, no matter what their literacy level, where they live or their access to the Internet. Social media, including Facebook and Twitter have proven especially successful in promoting Start with Hi.
